PAPTAC’s National Awards

Awards for research and technical papers, and for service to PAPTAC and the Canadian pulp and paper industry are conferred at the Annual Meeting of the Association (PaperWeek Canada).

John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal

The John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal is the Association’s premiere award, and was instituted at the 75th Annual Meeting of PAPTAC, to recognize the contribution of its founder, and first chairman, Dr. John S. Bates. The John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal may be presented annually to a member of PAPTAC in recognition of long-term scientific and technological contributions to the pulp and paper industry.

PAPTAC Fellows

PAPTAC Launched its Fellowship Program during its 100th Anniversary celebrations to recognize outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a long-term and significant contribution to either the Association, the pulp & paper sector and the advancement of science and technology in the industry.

Honorary Life Membership

Honorary Life membership recognizes an individual for making a significant and demonstrable contribution to advance PAPTAC’s programs through voluntary service and leadership in any of the various functions within the Association’s structure, which includes council activities, committees, branch activities, conferences, and courses. Honorary Life Members may be elected by unanimous vote of the Executive Council from time to time in recognition of outstanding contribution to the Association and the pulp and paper industry.

Certificate of Appreciation

The purpose of this award is to recognize individuals who have provided exceptional services to PAPTAC and/or the Canadian pulp and paper industry. It is open to any individual (member or non-member) who has made a special and unique contribution, or has provided valued, long-term service to the Association and/or the Canadian pulp and paper industry.

F.G. Robinson Award

Created in 1942 and named after a past Chairman of the Association, the F.G. Robinson Award honours the Chair of a PAPTAC Committee who, in the opinion of the Executive Council, has contributed the most towards the furtherance of the aims and objectives of the Association and who has shown outstanding leadership and service to his or her committee.

Jasper Mardon Memorial Prize

The Jasper Mardon Memorial award honours the memory of its namesake, who made many significant contributions to the development of papermaking, and recognizes an important technical accomplishment in advancing the science and technology of papermaking described in a paper presented at a PAPTAC annual meeting. The Mardon Prize is intended to honor the memory of Jasper Mardon, who made many significant contributions to the development of papermaking.

Howard Rapson Memorial Award

Created by the Association’s Bleaching Committee in 1999, in memory of Dr. H. Rapson, who committed his working life to the science and technology of chemical pulp bleaching, this award fosters and recognizes the presentation of high quality papers for advancements in this field (or in the field of chemical pulp bleaching).

Douglas Atack Award

The Douglas Atack Award fosters the presentation of high quality papers in the field of mechanical pulping. It was created by the Association’s Mechanical Pulping Committee in recognition of D. Atack’s life-long professional contributions to the science and technology of the mechanical pulping industry.

Douglas Jones Environmental Award

This award acknowledges the presentation of high quality papers at PAPTAC conferences and meetings in special areas to be established by the PAPTAC Executive Council. For the foreseeable future, the topic of environmental improvement is the special area named by the Executive Council. The award was first presented in 1971, to honour Douglas Jones, for thirty years at the head of the Association’s staff, first as Secretary-Engineer, then Executive Secretary and latterly as Manager.

H.R. MacMillan Award

The H.R. MacMillan trophy is awarded to the author of the best overall Paper presented at the PACWEST Annual Conference. The H.R. MacMillan Annual Memorial Award was initiated by the Western and Pacific Coast Branches. Each year the trophy is eagerly sought at the winner’s pulp mill.

I.H. Weldon Award

The I.H. Weldon Award for Best Paper is bestowed upon the Member who presents the best paper at an official meeting of PAPTAC from six months before to six months after the previous Annual Meeting (PaperWeek). The I.H. Weldon Award for Best Paper was first presented in 1930 in commemoration of the late Isaac H. Weldon, past president of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association.
