ISO 50001, a voluntary Standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), was published in June, 2011. This Standard specifies requirements for an organization to establish, implement and improve an Energy Management System. The purpose is to enable organizations to take systematic approach in order to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption. Implementation of this Standard should lead to reductions in energy costs, GHG emissions and other environmental impacts, through systematic management of energy.

What Will You Learn?

• Understand the ISO 50001 Standard and how it will impact the Canadian industry
• Who is involved with the development and delivery of the ISO 50001
• Current status and pilots in Canada
• How Energy Management Information System (EMIS) is linked to implementation of the ISO 50001

Ahmad Husseini is Manager Standards Development at CSA with more than 40 years of experience in the engineering field, including environmental, industrial utility, water treatment plant design and construction management, oil and gas and production management. Ahmad has held several international positions for ISO, including Secretary to Technical Committees and Working Groups on EMS, and Forest Management. He chaired the Environmental Labelling Working Group ISO/TC207/SC3/WG2 which developed ISO 14021 on Self Declared Environmental Claims. He served as the International Secretary to ISO TC 207 on Environmental Management (ISO14000) for 10 years. At present, among other things, Ahmad is managing the development of the CSA Z809 and Z804 on Sustainable Forest Management standards. Ahmad is the author of various papers on Life Cycle Assessment, Packaging, Environmental Labelling and Design for the Environment.

Bob Fraser is a Professional Engineer with thirty six years of experience in the management and delivery of Government energy and research programs as well as the delivery of project management and engineering services to private sector organizations. As Chief, Engineering Support Services, he provides technical support to the Industrial Programs Division of the Office of Energy Efficiency, Natural Resources Canada. He is responsible for the deployment of Government Programming to support the introduction of Energy Management Systems to Industry. Mr. Fraser is currently involved in two pilot projects to demonstrate the implementation of an ISO 50001 energy management system at a number of Canadian industrial sites.

Peter Bassett has over 28 years of specialized experience in the industrial energy efficiency field. His industrial energy efficiency experience includes development and turn-key delivery of projects, design and delivery of energy efficiency programs and training workshops and consulting to large process industries on the implementation of EMIS systems and pilot ISO 50001 implementation. Peter is currently leading a pilot of ISO 50001 at 3M Canada under the Global Superior Energy Partnerships program (US/Canada) (supported by Enbridge and Natural Resources Canada) and is playing a key role with implementation of ISO 50001 for an iron and steel facility in Russia.
