4. Environmental Impact (Dave Willis)
Attendees: Jamie
Gates, Tim Gilliss, Stephen Young, Mark Healy, Eric Tremblay, Kent Ramsey,
Caren Caffrey, Rob Jude, Ross Stacey, Chris Ho, Kari Rae, Guy Normandeau,
Daniel Robinson, Ross Anderson, Shane Svendsen, Tom Burton, Neil Aerts, Ralph
MacDonald, Tom Mullen, Doug Reid, Michel Epiney, Lou Legall, Ted Tam, Luke
Monk, Dave Willis
Increase in
attendance, and especially the increase in mill representation, was very
helpful in ensuring the right activities are being pursued in the subcommittee.
New Priorities – The main theme that emerged as a focus for the subcommittee was the need to understand what emerging trends and issues of an environmental nature may be important to be cognizant of. It was decided to research this for an upcoming session on “Future Environmental Trends and Issues”. Action steps will be focused on assembling this session.
Project participants - Tim Gilliss, Kent Ramsey , Ross Anderson (Scandinavian trends) Ralph McDonald – environmental committee liaison, Luke Monk (scrubbers, air), Tom Mullen, Dave Willis
5. Bleaching Protocol (Irene Yaraskavitch replacing Dan Davies)
Attendees: Irene
Yaraskavitch
Jean
Bouchard
Jim
Collins
Laurier
Morissette
Don
McCabe
The revised glossary
will be sent to all Committee members for their review and comments. The final revised version should be ready
for the Fall meeting. Jean Bouchard
will take care of revising the French translation after final approval of the
English version. Jean also suggested
and agreed to provide a translation of terms at the end of the glossary -
English to French in the English version and French to English in the French
version.
Copies of the revised
Glossary should be sent to universities and colleges. The last time this was done the Committee purchased the Glossary
from PAPTAC at a discount price and sent them out.
The Glossary should
be available to Committee members either free of charge or at a discount price
when requested through the Committee.
Would it be possible to post the Glossary in the members’ only section
of the Committee website? Someone needs
to check with/inform PAPTAC of this.
Regarding the Bleaching
Protocol, PAPTAC should insist that our protocol is the only one used at
conferences and in journals that they sponsor/co-sponsor. Someone needs to discuss with/ask Rob Wood
to contact other pulp & paper organizations (TAPPI, Appita, KCL, STFI) to
establish a global standard protocol for use in conferences and journals.
New chair: Ralph Lunn
6. Teaching Bleaching (Rae Cunnington)
·
Bleaching Course
PAPTAC
has no plans at present for holding a Bleaching Course in 2002 or 2003. However, this sub committee believes there
is sufficient interest for a course in the fall of 2003. It is suggested that it be held in a mill
town, which could base load attendance.
Prince George and Kamloops were suggested as possible locations. It was recommended that mills in these
locations be canvassed to determine support.
Previous
comments regarding course concerns such as commercialization, time management,
use of overheads versus Power Point and speaker availability after their
presentations still need to be addressed.
R. Cunnington is to follow up.
At
the Business Meeting, a poll showed 15 members would send someone to the
course. No-one present was against
having a course at this time.
·
Frequently Asked
Questions
A
narrow focus is to be adopted to get this project going. Sub-committee reports will be reviewed and
catalogued. Issues around questions and
answers from the e-mail should be handled by the Internet sub-committee.
·
Chlorine Dioxide
Generator Users Group Meeting
Our sub-committee will only be involved if EKA and Sterling participate at the same meeting. These firms will be canvassed. Otherwise it will be up to individual vendors to put on their own user group meetings.
·
EPIC is sponsoring a
two day general pulp and paper course in Toronto in Feb, 2003. It is not believed that this conflicts with
PAPTAC courses.
7. Bleaching Equipment (R. Cunnington
replacing Murray Walters)
·
Chlorine Dioxide
Storage Tank Containment, Spill Mitigation and Risk Assessment (Murray Walters)
Murray
advised that the survey results will be appended to the minutes of this
meeting.
·
Kappa Analyzers (Stan
Heimberger)
A
questionnaire is nearly ready for issuance to mills. R. Cunnington has some revision of questions and will contact
Stan with comments so that the questionnaire can be issued soon.
·
Extraction Stage pH
Control (Doug Reid)
Doug
is to e-mail mills for volunteers to send samples of Eo stage filtrate from
different positions in this stage to Eka’s facility in Valleyfield,
Québec. The samples will be forwarded
to Marietta where the relationship between temperature and pH will be assessed.
·
Bleach Plant Energy
Benchmarking (Dave Thireault)
Ralph
MacDonald is to follow up with Dave regarding progress on this assignment.
·
Update Bleach Plant
Scrubber (Rae Cunnington)
Rae
has received the last questionnaire and is modifying it. The Environmental Sub-Committee will be
adding specific questions to the questionnaire. (Luke Monk and Kent Ramsay are to make this happen). It is hoped that it will be released to the
mills soon.
Kari
Rae (Skookumchuck) and Guy Normandeau (Peace River) are to report to this
sub-committee at the next meeting in Skookumchuck on recent changes to their
scrubber systems.
At
the next sub-committee meeting in Skookumchuck, Kent Ramsey will outline what
he is proposing to do for documentation of regulatory situations in various
jurisdictions.
·
There is interest in
a new project concerning bleach plant mixers.
Don McCabe is to e-mail committee members regarding what items they want
to address at future technical or sub-committee sessions.
·
Listing Past
Sub-Committee Assignments (Dennis Owen)
Dennis
has started this assignment. He is to
report at the fall meeting and post results to chair persons.
·
Some discussion took
place on the use of audio conferencing.
It was decided to broach the Internet Sub-Committee to see if there is
any interest in this technology. It
would not be considered as a replacement for Bleaching Committee Meetings.
· With minimal progress made on some assignments, the sub-committee was canvassed to determine if there was sufficient interest in keeping all projects open. It was agreed to keep all projects open.
