The Spring 2002 PAPTAC Mechanical Pulping Committee meeting was held March 18 - 20 in Portland, OR, with a mill visit to Norpac. The meeting was jointly held with and hosted by the TAPPI Mechanical Pulping Committee and coincided with the TAPPI Pacific Section Shibley meeting. There were 47 members and guests in attendance. As usual for these joint meetings, the large majority of attendees were from the PAPTAC Committee with only a few from the TAPPI Committee.
Presentation topics included Paprican’s new TMP pilot plant, smart plates, on-line chip moisture and bulk density measurement, refiner motor failures, use of enzymes in TMP, TMP upgrade at F.F. Soucy, refiner consistency sensors at F.F. Soucy, TMP energy optimization at Alberta Newsprint, and mechanical pulp washing. There was an open discussion session on energy as well as the usual mill problems and opportunities session.
The Fall 2002 Meeting is scheduled to be held September 23 - 25 in Chicoutimi, QC, with a mill visit to Abitibi-Consolidated’s Kénogami Division in Jonquière.

PAPTAC
Energy Committee Meeting, May 13-15, 2002, Whitecourt, AB.
Committee
business:
Chairmanship
– A new chairman is needed by the 2003 PAPTAC Annual Meeting.
Energy course –
The course was held in Toronto in October 2001. It was well attended by mill
people and feedback was very good. It will again be offered October 23-25, 2002
in Montréal at Paprican’s main laboratory. As the result of feedback from the
2001 course, the order and length of some presentations has been changed. In
addition, there will be parallel sessions for the chemical pulping and
mechanical pulping presentations. There will be a mill tour at Domtar’s
Cornwall mill.
Benchmarking
– The benchmarking survey developed by Paprican is based on a methodology
developed by the IEA Pulp and Paper sub-committee. It breaks out energy use by
process area. A proposal has been developed to assist mills in completing the
survey and developing a plan for ongoing completion of the survey.
Fall and Winter Meetings
– The fall meeting is planned for September 23-25, 2002 in Thunder Bay,
Ontario. Mill tours will be sought at Bowater. The winter meeting will again be
held in Montreal in conjunction with the PACTAC annual meeting.
NRCan conference on renewable energies – The proposed conference and trade show is tentatively
planned for October 2003. An outline was distributed. Seldon MacKenzie will
discuss involvement in the conference with the PAPTAC executive council.
ECO awards
– New posters were distributed for the 2002 ECO awards. Submit award information
to Tom Browne at Paprican ([email protected]).
Annual Meeting Sessions
– Last year the committee sponsored one technical paper session. Four to six
papers per session are need. A discussion was held on possible parties to
solicit papers.
Other business
– OEE has created energy efficiency awards. See www.energyawards.nrcan.gc.ca

This
committee is being restructured into an advisory group over the next few
months. Anyone interested in
participating is invited to contact Rob Wood at PAPTAC.
PAPTAC have not scheduled a Pulp Bleaching Course for 2002 or 2003, primarily because of the low registration at the last course in October 2001. If there is sufficient interest by the Pulp Bleaching Committee in having a course in 2003 they would be prepared to put on a course.
