3. BUSINESS MEETING

3.1 LIASON REPORTS

3.1.1 Alkaline Pulping – John Brazil (Jeff Bennett)

No report this time.

3.1.2 Mechanical Pulping – Irene Yaraskavitch

Daniel Ouellet, Paprican, Vancouver is the new Chair as of January 2001. The Spring 2001 Meeting was held jointly with the TAPPI Mechanical Pulping Committee in Ottawa April 23 - 25. Total attendance was 81. There were about 15 attendees from the TAPPI Committee with only 2 people from a mill (the same one no less). The technical agenda encompassed on-line instrumentation, energy, bleaching, and enzyme pitch control. The mill visit was to the new TMP facility at Papier Masson in Masson, Quebec. The Fall 2001 Meeting is being planned for the end of September in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, with mill visits to Abitibi-Consolidated, Stephenville, and Corner Brook Pulp & Paper (Kruger).

3.1.6 TAPPI Bleach Committee – Dennis Owen

Dennis had not received minutes from the last TAPPI Bleach Committee meeting.

He reported that the last meeting was in Duluth. There was no agenda. Only 4 mill people, 2 from the same mill, attended. Dennis found the meeting overall to be disappointing. There were two good technical presentations, however, and some good sharing of information by one mill member. A joint meeting between TAPPI and PAPTAC Bleach Committees was suggested. Jacksonville, FL is the next meeting place.

3.1.7 Process Control – Laurier Morisette will be new liason

No report this time.

3.1.8 PAPTAC Professional Development – Rae Cunnington

  1. Had to cancel their proposed session at the 2001 annual meeting because of lack of papers. May have a panel discussion at the 2002 meeting to address specific issues important to professional development, as well as a paper session on "Delivering Results Through Training and Professional Development Innovation".
  2. TECH 2000 program enrolment was good at 360 versus 180.
  3. They are still actively considering the implementation of computer based courses, either conversion of all/part of the current TECH course or the launching of new short courses in that format. The upcoming energy course requires participants to bring lap top computers to perform assignments as a major portion of the interactive course.
  4. The concern here is that PAPTAC do not want to alter the "in person" and "networking" components of the TECH program which are consistently rated key success factors for the participants.

  5. There is a push on to expand the membership of this committee.
  6. Observation that TAPPI bleaching and pulping seminars were experiencing notable declines in enrolment and there is a concern this may carry over into PAPTAC courses as a trend in the industry.
