The Fall 2002 PAPTAC
Mechanical Pulping Committee meeting was held September 23 - 25 in Chicoutimi,
QC, with mill visits to Abitibi-Consolidated Kénogami and Bowater Dolbeau. There were 33 members and guests in
attendance; approximately half of the attendees were mill personnel.
Presentation topics included effect of
wood and pulp quality on pulp linting propensity, overviews of the two mills,
the refining system at Kénogami, freeness control of screen accept pulp, use of
sulphur chemicals in the pulp and paper industry, and options for bleaching
mechanical pulp with a lower COD load.
There was a roundtable discussion on cost reduction projects as well as
the usual mill problems and opportunities roundtable session.
As the 2003 International Mechanical
Pulping Conference is being held in Quebec City at the beginning of June, there
will probably not be a Spring Committee meeting. Possible locations for the Fall 2003 meeting were discussed; the
Executive will make a decision on the location and proceed with the meeting
planning.
The Mechanical Pulping Committee has organized two sessions of five papers each for the 2003 PAPTAC Annual Meeting.

Research (J.Bouchard)
The research
committee has been actively involved in the transition from the Wood Pulp
Network to the creation of the Universities and Research Organizations in
P&P Network. This network has a broader mandate and Paprican will continue
to assume the leadership.
The committee
has also taken the responsibility of the Graduate Student Seminar (which was
held at McGill the Monday before the Annual Meeting) and has made it as an
official session of the Annual Meeting. This session will be held on Thursday
and will include oral presentations and poster session.
