1. What environmental issues are of interest to mills? What issues are well suited to this subcommittee? Where can we make a difference?

1. Previous Business

• Low AOX/zero AOX Future limits in BC and ON. Bleaching Equipment Sub committee is developing a tech session on non-chlorine delignification options to meet low AOX. We would like to contribute in terms of what is the environmental impact of different means of achieving low AOX. Dave to stay in touch with Murray and Rae and begin assembling information.

• Moving Bed Bioreactor / Reverse osmosis at Irving Pulp. We are requesting a presentation in the subcommittee presentation since the tech sessions are covered off for the next 2 meetings.

• Regulations in the US and Europe can impact Cdn mills, when they intend to sell pulp into these countries. It may be valuable to survey mills to see how broad is the impact. Calvin would be willing to draft a short survey for this if the main group would find it valuable. Discussed in main meeting. Customers are requesting/demanding varied specifications. Qustion is whether a group approach is desired or mills want to retain competitive advantage where they have overcome barriers to entry. It was agreed to ask through the emailing list whether 1) Mills were willing to discuss regulatory barriers and issues to selling pulp into other countries, and 2) whether a survey on the topic was felt to be of value. Dave to issue email in 1-2 weeks.

1. Pulp Bleaching Course

• held October 15 to 18, 2001 in Vancouver
• 19 students, all from mills
• appeared to be lots of interest
• some concern over commercialism in one presentation
• comments received that more speakers could have hung around after their presentations to be available for students to talk to them

1. Canfor has approached PAPTAC for an abbreviated pulp bleaching course to be held in Prince George later this year. For this type of request our sub committee suggests that we continue to be involved if:

• it is a general course, even if abbreviated
• the company guarantees a minimum number of participants and it is open for other companies to send people to

1. For the next full bleaching course our sub-committee suggests:

• hold it annually because some mills find it easier to schedule sending one operator per year to it
• rotate on an east /west basis
• location is important, must be easy to get to and yet be close to a mill for a tour

1. At our last sub-committee meeting we suggested taking on an assignment called "Frequently asked Questions in Bleaching". The intent of this is to gather the wisdom of the bleaching committee members. It is not the intent of competing with the red book or courses etc. Realizing that this is a big undertaking we have decided to:

• start off with the D₀ stage
• make it a WEB based document so that it can be easily updated
• go from there

1. Next technical sessions:

• spring 2002, Dryden, two part session on the last and future 25 years in bleaching (because it is the committees 25^th anniversary) and a focus on the D₁ bleaching stage. Dennis and Chris to organize the 25 year items and Rae and Murray to organize the material for the D₁ stage.
• fall 2002, Skookumchuck, "Non Chlorine Delignification", Murray to organize with help from Rae.

• In response to a question regarding training material for new process engineers, all that could be suggested was attendance at the bleaching course and the use of "Frequently asked Questions in Bleaching" when developed.
• There is a need for an R-8 users group meeting. This would not be organized by PAPTAC. Murray and Paul to contact Sterling Chemicals.
