3. BUSINESS MEETING

3.1 LIASON REPORTS

3.1.1 Alkaline Pulping – John Brazil (Jeff Bennett)

Neither John nor Jeff present at Halsey. No report.

3.1.2 Mechanical Pulping – Irene Yaraskavitch

The Fall 2001 Meeting was held September 23 - 25 in Corner Brook, NF, with mill visits to Corner Brook Pulp & Paper and Abitibi-Consolidated, Stephenville. Attendance was approximately 35. The Committee will be sponsoring two sessions with five papers in each at the Annual Meeting. Raymond Paquet, Kemira Chemicals, will be the Committee Vice-Chair for 2001/2002 and Chair for 2003/2004. The Committee website has been re-designed and is accessible through PAPTAC's website; a members' only area is being developed/modeled on that of the Bleaching Committee website. The Spring 2002 Meeting will be held jointly with the TAPPI Mechanical Pulping Committee with TAPPI being the host Committee.

3.1.3 Energy – Murray Walters

The big news is our first Energy Short Course will run October 31- November 2 in Toronto, based on the Energy Monograph. This is a full PAPTAC Tech Course with credits and all. Registration stands at 25 as of yesterday, a very respectable figure for a first time. The course takes two and a half days, with mill visits to a Norampac liner board mill and a biomass-fuelled cogeneration plant on the afternoon of the third day. Given the decent registration, the course will probably be run again next year in the Fall, probably out West.

3.1.4 Environmental – Ralph MacDonald

Ralph not present and no report available.

3.1.5 Research – Jean Bouchard

Nothing to report.

3.1.6 TAPPI Bleach Committee – Dennis Owen

Spring 2001 Meeting Minutes are in the PAPTAC Bleach Committee Meeting Fall 2001 Minutes Attachments.

3.1.7 Process Control – Laurier Morisette

No report this time.

3.1.8 PAPTAC Professional Development – Rae Cunnington

This is an incomplete report as I am awaiting the minutes from their last meeting that again was a teleconference call.

PAPTAC courses this year have had attendance from high teens to over 40.

The chemical pulp bleaching course was held last week. Nineteen students. Appears to have been well received.

There is an expression of interest in having a bleaching course for the Canfor mills in Prince George later this year. This is to be discussed in the teaching bleaching sub committee meeting.

3.1.9 Secondary Fibre – Dan Davies

This meeting was held in conjunction with the 6th Research Forum on Recycling, Oct 1 – 4 also in Magog. This Forum has a pre-registered total of 120-135 attendees. It will remain at 2 –3 year’s frequency and held in Eastern Canada. Niagara-on-the-Lake could be a good location for the next Forum and Abitibi-Consolidated’s new deink plant at Thorold may be the mill visit. It is planned to have the manuscript on CD-ROM for the next Forum.

The paper selection sub-committee for 2002 PAPTAC Annual Meeting have received eight abstracts and selected six of them. If they do not receive more abstracts they will consider having only one recycling session at the Annual Meeting.

Chad Bennington (Paprican) discussed the proposed Recycling Course. The committee proposed to hold the course in Fall 2002, as a three-day session rather than five-day. They would need 16 – 18 students to break even and they would target young engineers and staff who do not work in production.

The guest speaker was Aanon Roring, Technical Director Recycling at Norske-Skog Norway. He gave a presentation on the recent start-up of a recycle mill in Norway.

3.4 FINANCIAL

Ross Anderson reported that the Committee has $4,800 in the bank. A cheque will be issued to P & T, Halsey to help offset some of this meeting's costs and there will still be enough for the 2001 Montreal PAPTAC Annual Meeting Bleaching Session Speakers' gifts. Ross will prepare a request in the near future for Suppliers to contribute $250 to $300.

3.5 NEXT MEETING

3.6 NEXT TECHNICAL SESSION

Rae Cunnington will kindly organize the session.

To celebrate the Bleach Committee's 25 year anniversary we will have topics re: Bleaching 25 years ago and what next 25 years hold in store. Also part of the session will cover the D1 stage.
