Learning how to operate a ClO2 Generator and dealing with process upsets are essential tasks facing most bleached pulp mills. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were developed to attain operating safety and efficiency. Until recently, SOP were presented to the ClO2 Generator Operator as written instructions only. For a new or Relief Operator, this text can appear to be a code of numbers and obscure names or phrases.

Interactive SOP tools are designed to provide the user with information and instructions in a more intuitive manner using multimedia technology such as:

  1. Text in easy to follow, step-by-step instructions providing both an "ACTION" to perform and a "DISCUSSION" explaining results or consequences of the action.
  2. Visual Instruction to demonstrate by example in the form of:
    1. Photographs
    2. Videos
    3. Flow Charts
    4. Tables
  3. Audio Instruction to further explain or clarify an important point.
  4. Process Animation to provide dynamic simulation of critical process components and to illustrate how emergency procedures are carried out.
  5. 3D Modeling to give a birds-eye view of the mill and a fly-by to aid in orientation.
  6. Equipment Locations linked to the 3D Model to show which components are housed in a particular area.
  7. P&ID Equipment Links to help find the exact location of a piece of equipment on the 3D Model.

Using these tools to enhance the learning process will make training more effective and more enjoyable for all those involved.
