Mill Opportunities Session


Air Products
  • working with Paprican on a project on oxygen delignificaion trying to understand why we can get 50% delignification in the lab, but not in the field
AlPac
  • installed Praxair VSA plant 45 tpd , on-line mid January
Boise Cascade
  • trying to get filler levels up in the paper
  • working with ICI on trying to get improved yield
  • high kappa pulping to get yield increase, have not seen any increase on aspen yet
  • anaerobic treatment of condensates getting methane gas - trial
Buckeye
  • dissolving Kraft pulp mills (3 in US)
  • now designing Eop stage, on-line next year
  • #1 mill trials at 50% substitution , 1999 (first in dissolving Kraft industry
  • working with Florida State Government to spend $40 million to run effluent pipeline 18.5 miles, will treat with oxygen at end of the pipe in the Gulf of Mexico
Canfor Prince George
  • will reach ISO 14000 by October/97
  • developing market for bleached sack Kraft
  • run both mills using 5 self directed work teams
Cariboo P&P
  • new chip thickness screening system including chip conditioner last year, running well
  • started up a tall oil plant
  • reducing AQ with surfactant in the digester - trial
  • high temperature enzyme trials
  • ISO 14000 may be complete by end of year
Celgar Pulp
  • initiated a corrosion monitoring program in digester
  • Do Ahlmix MC mixer
  • will install new washer in Eop position
  • chemical program to control scale in Eop position
Champion
  • Pensacola negotiations continue with Florida State Government for a consent order (permit)
  • both Pensacola lines converted to ECF
  • Canton mill BFR program going well - getting the last 100 USG is the most difficult because of overall balance in the system, but have had days with 100% closure, had some tank linings fail

  • started on steel work in new plant in Quebec City
  • hired sales and technical people for Quebec

  • cost reduction thrust, especially energy
  • ClO2 heat exchangers
  • reusing more water in process

  • increased RB capacity - went from two air levels to 4 air levels on CE boiler

  • bleach plant costs on DCS so operators can minimize cost
  • kappa analyser starting up

  • FCCL splitting into 2 companies - PulpCo and PaperCo
  • implemented operating teams responsible for operations/maintenance/process/engineering by area
  • new M&D digester and DD washer running well
  • installing 5 MC pumps and 2 MC mixers in 1997
  • FCCL is the target company for the BC union negotiations (again)

  • restructured into operating teams
  • presently the beta site for Honeywell's new supervisory control package

  • Beloit knotter, D1 washer drum replaced SMO with FRP
  • Kajaani on-line fibre analyser
  • purchased a new tertiary screen, after 3 weeks bottom blew out, found manufacturers defect, no one hurt
HA Simons
  • building an Indonesian mill, Kalimantan, 1500 tpd
Harmac Pacific
  • started up second mini-oxygen - Nov/96
  • started up second Eop filtrate vent scrubber - May/97
  • started thickness screens and conditioner
  • steam shower on pulp machine - first on a pulp machine
  • rebuild of small recovery boiler later in 1997
  • replacing anhydrous ammonia in secondary treatment - safety issue for BC Ferries

  • interest in simplified bleaching by three stage mills in US

  • changes in June - new CD scanner on pulp machine, layboy changes
  • ISO 14000 this year
  • flow and consistency measurements out of all towers - justified because of grade changes every two days
  • replaced steaming vessel - high chlorides in wood chips caused severs cracking after 6 years - went for carbon steel with stainless steel lining

  • $30 million expansion on chloralkali plant - added 10%-15%
  • joint research work on aspen
  • AQ in low solids pulping with Ahlstrom

  • trials on small gas mixers
Irving Pulp
  • new steam mixer, TSP and chemical mixer
  • converted from methanol to peroxide in ClO2 generator for BOD reduction
  • considering reverse osmosis on foul condensates for BOD reduction
  • CO2 addition trial
  • beta test site for Honeywell for advanced/advanced controls

  • 606 days no LTA (1.6 yrs)
  • record productions in March and April
  • new evap steam stripper in Fall

  • Chemrec recovery booster started in New Burn NC (Weyerhauser) 750,000 OD lbs/d

  • looked at yield from 15 to 40 k number - measurable increase in the lab
  • evaluated effect of temperature and time on ClO2 consumption in an acid wash stage

  • 10% increase in production of sulphuric at PG

  • bleaching changes - October/96 ECF
Monsanto
  • new name, but won't know what it is until June 1
Northwood Pulp and Timber
  • mini oxygen and closed wash system for 4 months, not yet seeing the benefit due to poor washing, limited temperature, and tramp water
  • started up demineralizers, hardness now less than 50 ppb
  • margin improvement program - reduce $80 million company wide ($40 million from mill) per year
  • ISO 14000 in 1997
Paprican
  • moving paper machine, so more space available for other projects
  • electrochemical an bleaching projects being expanded
Potlatch
  • superbatch started January
  • good quality, but severe evaporator problems with berkite fouling (overloaded liquor system), also calcium carbonate scaling problem, suspect that as you impregnate chips in superbatch it solublizes calcium in the chips, since no high temp will not precipitate until it gets to the evaporators, so form calcium carbonate on the tubes - tough problem
PH Glatfelter
  • changed from 4 sstage to 3 stage bleaching by eliminating hypo stage
  • now 70%, going to 100% DcEpD
Pope and Talbot
  • swapped some bleach washers out - Do now SMO, this summer putting in Corrudec 3, upgrading first oxygen mixer to ahlmix
  • had trouble with Douglas fir - peroxide after chlorine dioxide helped gain brightness 1 lb peroxide to 3 lbs ClO2
  • stainless j tube in fourth stage
  • DCS on recaust
  • Monox-L

  • cost reduction program focusing on chemicals
  • starting glow solids cooking in July
  • increase mill production to 200,000 by 1999 (now 400 tpd)

Weyerhauser, Grande Prairie
  • Environmental license negotiations underway for 10 year permit - colour is an issue, so beginning feasibility study for oxygen delignification installation
  • became ISO 9002 certified this spring
  • new chip thickness screening and conditioning installed this spring
  • last year started up a chlorate pipeline from neighbouring chlorate plant, so no handling problems - great partnership effort
  • AQ trial this summer - yield driven
  • optimising chemical usage in bleach plant
Westvaco, Charleston
  • 5 bleach plants, by end of October will convert all mills to ECF
