BUSINESS MEETING


1.0 Opening Remarks

2.0 Review and Adoption of minutes of last meeting and this agenda
  • No changes

3.0 LIAISON REPORTS
3.1 Alkaline Pulping (A-79-01) (John Brazil)
  • no meeting since our last meeting, currently meeting in Prince George, expecting 35 members

3.2 Mechanical Pulping (A-79-06)(new liaison representative -Gordon Brown)
  • Irene Y. Is a member of the committee
  • previous meeting was in the fall of 1996 at Irving Paper
  • joint meeting in Seattle two weeks ago with TAPPI, they will have joint meetings every spring alternating between Canada and the US
  • Internet is currently being used as a tool
  • next meeting in Alma, QC

3.3 Energy (A-80-85)(new liaison representative - Carlo Dal Monte)
  • currently meeting at Mackenzie
  • major subcommittees - greenhouse gases

3.4 Environmental (A-80-04) (Dennis Matson)
  • this is Dennis' last meeting, the new liaison rep is Murray Walters
  • Subcommittee working on:
    • activated sludge treatment and control survey
    • COD performance of secondary treatment survey
  • next meeting in May has been cancelled

3.5 Research (A-81-01) (Jean Bouchard)
  • last meeting January/97 in Montreal
  • incoming chairman is Tony Yau, Donahue, Thorold
  • next meeting Trois Rivieres in May
  • 9th International Symposium on Wood and Pulping Chemistry to be held in Montreal June 9-12
  • Quebec government has released a position paper entitled "Fiscal Measures to Foster R&D"

3.6 TAPPI Bleaching 9(A-80-06) (Dennis Owen)
  • see previous notes

3.7 Process Control (A-83-01) (Tony Gomersall)
  • met January/97 at Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada annual meeting
  • 18 members, 6 mills represented, mainly supplier driven committee
  • Martin Savoie, Noranda is the new chair
  • Subcommittee activities:
    • sensor and control survey - will continue to monitor successful applications
    • fieldbus - technology is growing rapidly to allow field sensors to communicate
    • next meeting May 29 at Quesnel - topic is digester and recaust control by Kvaerner

    3.8 Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada Professional Development (A-84-01) (Rae Cunnington)
    • no meetings since Asheville in October 1996, so no minutes to review
    • Rae visited Rob Wood (Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada Technical Section Director) to discuss how to improve communications between Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada and the Bleaching Committee - see Teaching Bleaching section
    • Process Closure course sponsored by Environmental Committee was held April, 1997 and had 25 participants
    • Tech '97 Pulp Bleaching course will be held in Nanaimo, BC Sep 14-19, 1997 - see teaching Bleaching section

    3.9 Secondary Fibre/Recycling (A-91-01) (Tasso Skathos)
    • 20 members met January/97 at annual meeting, generally have 3 meetings per year
    • decided not to start an Internet page since not enough members have access
    • addressed concerns about transient membership
    • next meeting April/97 at Pine Falls
    • following meeting October/97, Quebec City
    • Recycling Forum to be held in Quebec ity October 7-9/97
    • Current main issues - stickies, papermaking, floatation deinking
    • Future Technical Issues
      • Brightness, bleaching of ONP, OMG
      • Bleaching - O2 delig, ClO2
      • pulping conditions
      • system closure, effluent handling

      3.10 Fibre Quality and Value (Jay Chen)
      • new subcommittee chaired by John Wood of Paprican
      • interested in best practices for supplying raw material

      4.0 New Projects and Assignments
      • we now have a new subcommittee dealing with Internet issues chaired by Chris Kanters

      5.0 STEERING COMMITTEE (Jim Collins)
      • see previous minutes
      • a certificate of appreciation could not be presented to Dennis Owen as he did not attend
      • the Bleaching Committee reversed the decision of the Steering Committee - the chair of the Bleaching Committee will continue to be a mill representative
      • Jean Bouchard and Jim Collins will bring a recommendation for a Howard Rapson Memorial Award to the Fall meeting
      6.0 1997 - 1998 COMMITTEE MEETING SCHEDULE
      1. October 1997 -- Irving P&P, St. Johns, NB
      2. Spring 1998 -- Tentative - Weyerhaeuser, Kamloops, BC
      3. Future?
