October 26 - 29, 1997

BUSINESS MEETING


1.0 Opening Remarks and Introductions
1.1 Presentation to Dennis Owen for his contribution to the Bleaching Committee.

2.0 Review and Adoption of minutes of last meeting and this agenda.

3.0 LIAISON REPORTS:
3.1 Alkaline Pulping (A-79-01) (John Brazil)
  • Meeting held Sept. 24 - 26/97 at Irving Pulp & Paper in Saint John, NB. Minutes not yet completed as of this date. Minutes will be distributed to everyone on the Bleaching Committee when they are completed.

3.2 Mechanical Pulping (A-79-06) (Gordon Brown)
  • Meeting next month.
  • Pulping course held this week at Niagara on the Lake.
  • IMPC in Houston 1999.
  • Previous meeting April, 1997 joint Tappi/Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada in West
  • Tacoma, Washington.

3.3 Energy (A-80-85)
  • Not recieved for minutes

3.4 Environmental (A-80-04) (Murray Walters)
  • One meeting cancelled.
  • Two projects on the go - COD and Activated Sludge practices. Will present results at next meeting.

3.5 Research (A-81-01) (Jean Bouchard)
  • Last meeting was held in Becancour, Quebec (May, 1997).
    The booklet written in 1989 about "Significant Canadian R & D Contributions to Innovation in the Pulp and Paper Industry" will be reviewed and updated. Our committee should have received a copy and a request for input.
  • In response to concerns from researchers, the JPPS Joint Management Committee is proposing to extend the limit to 5 pages free of charge. This proposal will be studied by Tappi and Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada when drafting their 1998 budgets.
  • List of accepted papers for the 1998 IPBC in Finland. See Appendix 2
3.6 TAPPI Bleaching 9(A-80-06) (Dennis Owen)
  • Minutes not yet out.
  • Anyone interested in attending their next Bleaching Committee meeting?

3.7 Process Control (A-83-01) (Tony Gomersall)
Meeting held at Quesnel, BC on April 29/30/97
  • Technical session on Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) Technology.
  • Kvaerner Chemetics presented technology and two control applications at Cariboo Pulp, BC.
    1. One on a continuous digester measuring white liquor and lowering recirculation liquor.
    2. One on the recausticizing application, measuring unclarified white liquor and clarified green liquor.
    Note: Presentations are available.
  • John McIllwain, Cariboo Pulp, hosted the Committee and presented the FTIR analyzer and control strategies being used at Cariboo.
Meeting held at Donohue Mill, Thorold, Ontario, October '97
Technical sessions on:
  • TMP power sharing simulation.
  • Loop tuning and monitoring on line.
  • Expert system on sheet breaks.
  • Power system CIM/21 (which is like the P.I. System).

Upcoming Meetings
January '98 Annual Meeting will be next committee meeting.
  • Tappi Control Conference, Vancouver, BC 1998
  • Control Systems '98 in Helsinki, Finland.

3.8 Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada Professional Development (A-84-01)
  • Bleaching Course led by Norm Liebergott held in Nanaimo - September 15-19 overall impression favourable
  • Professional Development Committee(PDC) held a meeting Sept 10. Notes to be issued.
  • PDC asked for a bleaching committee representative for input on Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada course scheduling, topics curriculum, leaders etc. Rae Cunnington agreed subject to approval by Bleaching Committee
  • PDC looking for input with Environmental Committee for co-sponsor course on minimum impact mill
  • Immediate needs are being met by other courses and conferences
3.9 Secondary Fibre/Recycling (A-91-01)
  • Not recieved for minutes

3.10 Fibre Quality and Value
  • Meeting held in early October/97 at Irving Pulp & Paper in Saint John, NB. Minutes not yet completed as of this date.
