STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING

1. Welcome by Jim Collins & Stuart Scott.

2. Introduction of Steering Committee members.

3. Items from Spring, 1997 Steering Committee Meeting minutes held in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • General consensus was that it was handled well.

4. Membership Discussion:
  • The membership list was reviewed.
  • Received request from David Willis and Tony Gomersall for full membership - accepted.
  • Julien Audette and Stan Heimburger have been dropped from the list.
  • Murray Webster, and Jerry Koblum, Jim Hopmans, P. E. Lapointe will be sent letters warning of their lack of attendance and contribution to the Committee - Action - Stuart Scott.
  • A letter will be sent to John Rizzi (NZ) requesting two way communication with their Bleaching Committee.

5. Meeting Structure:
  • Feedback forms to be filled in by attendees during the meeting. Stuart Scott to collect and collate.


6. Newsletter:
  • Done once per year and deemed timely and informative.

7. Sub-Committee Reports:
Internet/Email - Chris Kanters
  • Chris Kanters questioned what we want to pass on the WEB page under Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada's WEB page. Items included safety incidents,
  • minutes of the meeting, newsletter, problems and opportunities and meeting notification.
  • Chris Kanters will be the WEB Master for now.
  • Chris plans to make a small presentation at the annual meeting.
  • Any new items wishing to be posted to be sent to Chris.

Teaching Bleaching - Stuart Scott for Rae Cunnington
  • The Pulp Bleaching Course '97 was attended by 30 students.
  • Course was led by Norm Liebergott.
  • Overall feedback was favourable.
  • Next course scheduled for 1999.
  • Guy Martin of the Environment Committee has approached the Bleaching Committee to co-sponsor a course on Minimum Impact Mills. Course duration would be 1 week. The Steering Committee felt that at this time with all the other courses being offered, that it would decline. Perhaps in 1999.

Environmental Impacts - Jeff Tolan
  • The Sub-Committee is moving more towards rules and regulations and away from cause and effect.

Bleaching Protocol - Stuart Scott for Gary Berndt
  • A Preliminary Engineering Data Sheet for bleaching protocol has been drawn up.
  • A French version is in progress.

Bleaching Chemicals - John Griffiths
  • Need a new Chairman as John Griffiths is stepping down.
  • Chris Kanters to take over this responsibility but is leaving as the Annual Meeting Sub-Committee Chairman.

Annual Meeting - Chris Kanters
  • Chris Kanters is stepping down as Chairman (after this year's annual meeting).
  • Three (3) sessions planned:
    • Chemical Pulp Bleaching Potpourri
    • Mechanical Pulp Bleaching
    • Panel on Bleaching and Quality
  • Require two (2) more panelists for Bleaching and Quality.
8. Certificates of Appreciation
  • A certificate of appreciation will be given to Dennis Owen.
9. Future Meeting Dates / Locations
  • Spring '98 - Weyerhaeuser, Kamloops, B.C. - Meeting same week as Pac West Conference
  • Fall '98 - Paprican - Windsor, Quebec
  • Future - Grande Prairie, Espanola, Dryden ???
10. Future Technical Session Themes - Poll committee members.
  • Spring '98 - Focus on Oxygen
  • Fall '98 - Mill Closure - Paprican
  • Future - Focus on one stage of bleaching per session, e.g., Do stage, Eop stage.

11. W. Howard Rapson Memorial Award
  • Jim Collins attended his memorial. Very nice service.
  • Jim Collins and Jean Bouchard to come back to Steering Committee with ideas on basis and scope of the award.
  • The award was thought to be a medal with possible presentation at the annual meeting awards ceremony.
12. New Business
  • International Pulp Bleaching Conference is to be held in Canada in the year 2000. Richard Berry is to be Conference Chairman. Possible sites are Ottawa, Halifax, and Saint John. The Steering Committee's choice was Halifax.
