3.6 TAPPI Bleaching (A-80-06) (Dennis Owen - see Appendix 2)

Met at Beaumont, TX May 14-15, 1996. The minutes of this meeting are attached (Appendix 2).

The Fall 97 was held at the Nashville, TN TAPPI Pulp Conference on October 27/96. The minutes of this meeting are attached (Appendix 2).

3.7 Process Control (A-83-01) (Tony Gomersall)

Received minutes for April and September.

Limited action

Control Systems 96 was attended by 50% of Canadian mills and 110 people attended.

Ongoing survey on maintenance

Internet, Marc Champagne has presented Internet to CPPA executive, committee and chairs of committees.

Committee now has World Wide Web page available for communications and seminars.

All Process Control members are on the Internet. Their names and net addresses are in their meeting minutes. They are talking about holding meetings on the Internet.

3.8 CPPA Professional Development (A-84-01) (Rae Cunnington)

We finally received the minutes from two meetings in 1996 on Fri., Oct. 18, 1996. Items of interest are:

Course Development: The PDC feels that as long as the course format / quality does not suffer due to larger audiences, as many registrants as possible would be accepted.

Number of Courses Offered by CPPA: There is an increase in the number of courses offered by the CPPA. At the January meeting, Killen said "The PDC has actually strived for quality versus quantity and that it had been PDC’s unwritten policy to fill the ‘void’, and not offer courses being offered by other groups."

We have been informed regarding a Fall 97 Bleaching Course. We will sponsor, but we will require input regarding the content.
System Closure course to be sponsored by the Environment Committee.
Last bleaching course had 65 registered with 20 turned away. We will be looking at ways to accommodate more people if required. How can we handle this better? This will be discussed under the Teaching Bleaching Sub-committee. Dennis - why not once a year!

4.0 New Projects and Assignments

Internet E-mail (See also comments under 3.7)
Chris Kanters will attempt to set up a restricted users’ group on the Internet for bleaching questions. A Bleaching Committee users’ group appears to be impracticable at this time. He requests that anyone who is interested and knows about Internet to contact him. Current E-mail addresses to be sent to Chris Kanters for further development.
CPPA still working on putting Web site into place (See 3.7). Paprican still working on theirs. They have published a list of their E-Mail addresses in the Paprican 1997 Directory. We will need to tack onto this through one of these people.
Robot mailer for problems. Gerry Pageau would like this since this it goes direct to the members. Can be set up through Lotus notes.
Looking at information and for input from people.
Still looking at how to set up, etc.

5.0 STEERING COMMITTEE (Jim Collins)

Eastern Vice-Chair: We will be looking for a new Eastern Vice-Chair with Stuart Scott moving up to Chair after the Annual Meeting. Several suggestions have been made. Doug and Stuart will be approaching these people.

Membership Discussion: Discussion took place regarding the membership structure on Supplier / Mill Ratios. We will be increasing the Suppliers ratio to 28% with the addition of Doug Reid (Eka Nobel) and Rosanna DiLabio (Praxair) as Probationary Members.

Meeting Structure: Feedback from the members has resulted in some restructuring of the meeting to have subcommittee discussions in smaller groups and reporting back to the main committee.

Newsletter: A Winter newsletter will be published during mid-February, but it will be dependent on getting material to the Chair in a timely matter

Golfing on the Sunday prior to meeting is planned
Underground gold mine tour is planned
An alternate mill has been suggested - IRVING, St. John. They will be approached in case Marathon falls through
