The Canadian pulp and paper industry is highly energy intensive, ranking higher in this regard than iron and steel industries and petroleum refineries when bioenergy sources are included. Although energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data are well known at the sector level, other parts of the value chain are typically not reported or partly diluted with data related to the transportation sector. Therefore, activities such as harvesting, woody feedstock transportation and product transportation are often disregarded or overlooked despite the fact that diesel is exclusively consumed for these steps of the forestry value chain. This work has examined the energy consumption and associated GHG emissions (biogenic and non-biogenic) across the whole forestry value chain and has identified the most promising mitigation strategies for decreasing energy use and GHG emissions. These results were complemented with an estimate for the cost of inaction, from now leading to 2030, considering the forecasted higher fuel prices and low carbon plans and policies resulting from Canada’s commitment to fight climate change. |

Bahareh Golfar is a process engineer at Natural Resources Canada, involved with technical modelling and policy analysis at CanmetENERGY and Canadian Forest Services. She holds a PhD in statistical methods for chemical engineering applications from Queen’s university, Kingston. She has work experience in biofuel’s industry, combining her knowledge of engineering and data analytics to tackle some of the challenges in bioenergy production. In her current role, her main areas of focus include analysis of low carbon policies, path towards carbon negativity, and application of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). Jawad Jeaidi is a process engineer at CanmetENERGY in Varennes, Natural Resource Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in pulp and paper engineering and a master’s degree in process engineering from Grenoble INP - UGA. Jawad started his career in R&D and supported the design and development of clean technologies and bioproducts in Canada. He has also worked as a technical manager at an integrated newsprint mill where he has led energy and environmental projects. In his current role, Jawad uses systemic modelling techniques to support the Government of Canada for fighting climate disruption. |
