The paper industry is transforming as electronic media makes inroads into traditional paper markets and new technology creates new opportunities. In this economic climate mill personnel find themselves asked to do more with fewer resources. There is a need for rapid access to current practical information in all areas of papermaking including process control.

Effective process control is a key component in reducing operating costs or improving product quality. Traditional control tools can be highly effective when used correctly. In addition there are new technologies in measurement, control and communication. The need and opportunity lies in determining which are effective and practical.

PAPTAC and the Process Control Community are striving to meet this need for practical information. While traditional venues such as conferences and training seminars will be continued, we will also use methods such as webinars and e-mail question-and-answer forums. This will make it possible for anyone with an internet connection to participate as PAPTAC members share their successful applications of various technologies.

Process Control is part of all our operations and therefore the need for a Community that brings together individuals involved in this field has always been key for mill managers. In an environment where operations optimization and efficiency is part of an ongoing challenge and reality, the Process Control Community looks at tools, forums and learning opportunities to help the engineers in the industry achieve a high level of efficiency and access low-cost solutions to improve performance.
