FPInnovations success was obtained by its accelerated process and product development, with different business model. While maintaining intensive research program on the production process to produce biomaterial, the biomaterial commercial success depends on the acceleration of the product development and widening the spectrum of applications of the biomaterials.

    To maintain its leadership position FPInnovations is seeking a dynamic individual with large expertise in material science application to maintain, adjust and execute our biomaterial strategy.


    Reporting to the Vice President Pulp, Paper and BioProducts, the Research Manager - Cellulosic Biomaterials provides oversight, direction and leadership to the program consisting of approximately 40 technical staff. The incumbent leads the program team and communicate its benefits to our industry members and government partners. He works with Research Leaders and staff to develop annual research plans consistent with FPInnovations and its member’s strategies and priorities and ensures the realization of the program effectively and on budget, in line with the timeframes and high quality standards to meet customers’ expectations.


    • Contribute to the strategic plan of the organization by being aware of trends and opportunities, by understanding the needs of members and by having a clear vision of how the cellulosic biomaterial program can help our members and expand the market in North America and abroad;
    • Work closely with Research Leaders and staff and, in consultation with the VP, leading the development and implementation of an annual research program consistent with the industry priorities and with the biomaterial strategy;
    • Fulfill the mandate of the program in a financially responsible manner, including developing and managing the program budget;
    • Obtain revenue for the program and the organization by pursuing new contract opportunities with members, partners and associates of FPInnovations;
    • Contribute to business development efforts of the organization as part of the team of FPInnovations’ professionals;
    • Provide fair and equitable treatment to the employees under his supervision, including the performance appraisal and ongoing feedback;
    • Provide guidance and staff development opportunities and help the development of a succession plan for key program positions;
    • Responsible and pro-active in maintaining and promoting the health and safety practices and ensure that FPInnovations’ and all government’s safety standards are followed.
    • It is important to note that the responsibility will be reviewed with the incumbent in the implementation of the new Strategic Action Plan;


    • Masters or Ph.D. in material science, chemistry, chemical engineering or in a related field and fifteen (15) years of relevant experience in the field of material science and material applications or equivalent combination of education and experience;
    • Ten (10) years of experience in managing a research and innovation team and programs;
    • Five (5) years of experience in bio-sourced material development and application is desirable;
    • Understanding and experience in innovation process management including intellectual properties, concurrent engineering, market research and development and customer relation
    • Minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in an industrial research environment including customer relation and partnership development and management;
    • Experience in the development of strategies and annual action plans;
    • Proven leadership abilities;
    • Excellent project management and human resources skills;
    • Good problem solving, negotiation and consensus building skills;
    • Ability to motivate and inspire a team;
    • Good written and verbal communication skills in English and French with high standards of quality.
