    Purpose and Objectives
    This award acknowledges the presentation of high quality papers at PAPTAC conferences and meetings in special areas to be established by the PAPTAC Executive Council. For the foreseeable future, the topic of environmental improvement is the special area named by the Executive Council.

    A certificate and a gold pin.

    Open to PAPTAC members who are authors of papers:

    • presented at PAPTAC meetings;
    • considered for publication by PAPTAC.

    Papers presented from six months before to six months after the previous Annual Meeting.

    All qualifying papers describing new developments or experiences having significant effects on environmental improvement and presented at PAPTAC meetings and conferences will be eligible.

    Judging Rules
    Papers entered for competition will be judged by a Committee, the chairman of which is appointed by the Executive Council of the Association. In arriving at their decision the judges will take into account:

    • The practical value of the paper in its possible application to the pulp and paper industry.
    • The amount of study and investigation shown in its preparation.
    • The composition and literary merit.

    Papers to be eligible for competition must be the bona fide productions of those who contribute them and must not have been previously made public, nor made available to any other society in whole or in part, and shall be the property of PAPTAC.

    Judging Committee
    Chairman and two members to be appointed annually by the PAPTAC Executive Council. The Chairman will normally be a member of the Executive Council. It will be the duty of the committee to screen all PAPTAC papers for possible eligibility in the competition. The Committee may reserve the right not to make the award in any one year, for lack of suitable papers.

    Award Presentation
    At the next Annual Meeting of PAPTAC.

    Eligibility for other Awards
    Papers by members selected for the Douglas Jones Environmental Award will not be eliminated from consideration for the I.H. Weldon Award for Best Paper or the C. Howard Smith Award for Best Paper by a Young Member. It is quite conceivable for an outstanding paper to win more than one award in one year.
