    Pierre Slusarek
    Surintendant Pulperie at RockTenn

Pierre is a Chemical Engineering graduate, and earned a Masters degree in pulp and paper, from McGill University (Montreal). Pierre began his career as a Technical Services Process Engineer in 1990 at the La Tuque mill. In 1992 he became a Process Engineer for the Cooking and Washing department; in 1994 he was offered the position of Assistant Pulping Super intendent, and in 2005 was promoted to Superintendent.

In his work, Pierre does a lot of process optimization, quality monitoring, some management, and works on various projects promoting safety as well as providing technical support. Pierre became interested in pulp and paper during his university years. As a Chemical Engineer, Pierre did not see himself working in large urban centers; he wanted to work in regional mills. A pulp and paper mill was the perfect place. Pierre undertook projects related to pulp and paper during his Bachelor and continued with a Masters in the same field.

Despite hard times and rationalizations, Pierre has always had the concern to stay updated on everything regarding pulp and paper. He has participated regularly at the annual meetings of PAPTAC (PaperWeek Canada) and has been an active member of both the Alkaline Pulping and Bleaching Technical Communities. Pierre learned a lot by participating in these communities and developed many contacts in the industry which directly led to cost reductions and significant improvements at the La Tuque mill. In 2005 Pierre won the second prize in PAPTAC’s Energy Conservation contest. Pierre Slusarek dislikes status quo, he likes to think outside the box and believes that there is always room for improvement.
